On February 5th, San Franciscans will vote on Prop. A, a $185 million bond to repair the City’s neighborhood parks, playgrounds and restrooms, plant trees, rebuild recreation centers and protect open spaces. The measure was unanimously placed on the ballot by the Board of Supervisors and Mayor Newsom and is the first bond in the City’s ten-year capital plan to restore our older, declining physical facilities.

If passed, Prop A will also fund a number of Blue Greenway trail improvements and new parks along the southeastern bay shore. The City’s 2006 Blue-Greenway Task Force identified a series of open space improvements to benefit the City’s southern neighborhoods and continue public waterfront access southward. Proposed Blue Greenway projects on Port property that would be eligible to receive GO bond funds include:

* Bayfront Park at Mission Bay - it is the Port's responsibility to rebuild the Bay edge south of Pier 54 (currently fenced off and crumbling into the Bay) to allow Bayfront Park in Mission Bay to be constructed. To see Bayfront Park with and without the Ports contribution click here.

* Bay Trail - This project will develop design standards for improvements that will define the character of the Blue Greenway from China Basin Channel to the City's southern border. Improvements may include way-finding elements, interpretive signage, public art standards for trails, walkways and bike lanes, and other features that contribute to the identity of the Bay Trail along the Blue Greenway.

* Crane Cove Park at Pier 70 - Construction of a new major park adjacent to the Pier 70 shipyard. For more information visit pier70sf.org.

* Warm Water Cove - Improve and expand the existing Warm Water Cove Park by up to three acres.

* Islais Creek - shoreline improvements including rebuilding dilapidated wharves and removing ghost piles to allow public access and use of the Islais Creek area and other expanded green spaces around the Creek.

* Heron's Head Park - Blue Greenway gateway and park entry improvements that will help visitors locate Heron's Head Park.

Following passage of the bond, a community planning process will be conducted to further define the extent of improvements, funding levels, and schedule for these or other projects that may be part of the Blue Greenway.
